UK Defence Sector Suffers from STEM Skills Shortage

Last year's Ministry of Defence (MOD) report highlighted the importance that action is urgently needed to recruit and retain defence workers. Despite this, the scarcity of UK STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) talent continues to be a pressing concern.
Key findings from the Guidant Global report reveal that 83% of defence employers are concerned that a shortage of STEM talent will mean the UK’s defence capabilities will be outpaced by other countries in terms of technology. This apprehension is not unfounded, as 77% of supporting voters express concerns over a potential decline in defence capabilities, with a further 72% facing worry about the impact on economic growth. Further results reveal that 93% of defence employers are concerned that a shortage of STEM talent will mean the UK’s defence capabilities will be outpaced by other countries in terms of technology, action is clearly needed.
Among the critical areas experiencing a shortage of skilled professionals are engineering (48%), cyber & digital (33%), and manufacturing & mechanical domains (25%). With nearly 50% of defence employers reporting a deficit in engineering skills alone, it's evident that immediate action is imperative to aid this growing skill gap.
While half of the employers are engaging with educational institutions to address this issue company directors warn that more innovative solutions are needed. There is a huge necessity for both short-term and long-term strategies to safeguard the competitiveness of this sector.
The defence sector cannot afford to be complacent in the face of this talent shortage. Without prompt intervention, there is a real risk of falling behind in an increasingly competitive global landscape. The failure to address the STEM skills shortage could have far-reaching implications for the sector's viability. Currently, only 16% of respondents are collaborating with specialised STEM workforce providers. This figure presents the mass of missed opportunities that could help to fulfil immediate skill requirements and further underscores the urgency for strategic action.
As the workforce navigates through uncertain times, the resilience of the UK defence sector hinges upon its ability to adapt and innovate. The findings of this report serve as a call for collaborative action. By investing in STEM education, building sustainable partnerships with specialised providers, and implementing strategic workforce planning, companies can fortify the UK defence sector and ensure its continued relevance and competitiveness on the global stage.
