Role Overview:

The Umbilical Engineer will be responsible for analyzing the lifecycle performance of umbilical products within the scope of assigned projects. This includes ensuring compliance with internal, international, and client-specific standards. The role involves collaborating with senior engineers to identify additional risks and perform necessary engineering assessments beyond standard practices, ensuring that products are fit for purpose. The engineer will also provide support to other projects as needed, working closely with various disciplines including Structural, Drawing Office, Project Management, R&D, and Process teams.



Key Responsibilities:

  1. Specification Review & Design Basis Creation:

    • Review project specifications and assess them against internal standards.
    • Develop the design basis for umbilicals in accordance with project requirements.
  2. Lifecycle Performance Analysis:

    • Analyze the lifecycle performance of umbilical products, adhering to relevant standards and rules.
    • Create and verify calculation packages specific to the umbilical type/design.
    • Responsibilities include:
      • Umbilical Design:
        • Functional component design for steel tubes, hoses, and cables (LV/MV/FO).
        • Verification of cross-sectional design.
      • Manufacturability:
        • Design for manufacturability.
        • Accumulative plastic strain assessment.
        • Support for packing and loadout.
      • Installability:
        • Strength assessment of the umbilical structure.
        • Tensioner assessments for installation.
        • FEA for crush and clamp capacity.
        • Hold period assessment.
        • Pull-in load calculations.
      • In-situ Operation Verification:
        • Strength and fatigue assessments.
        • Sizing of bend restrictors and stiffeners.
        • Thermal and impact performance evaluations.
        • Seabed stability analysis.
        • Free span vortex-induced vibration assessment.
        • Crossing assessments.
      • Qualification & Verification Testing:
        • Develop test procedures.
        • Interpret test results and write reports.
  3. Project Support:

    • Provide technical support during design reviews, clarification meetings, and risk reviews throughout project and manufacturing phases, with guidance from Senior and Lead Engineers.
  4. Compliance & Efficiency:

    • Ensure work is completed according to guidelines, design rules, and procedures.
    • Contribute to departmental goals and identify technical risks, escalating them when necessary.
    • Update design rules as needed and manage deviations through proper change control procedures.
    • Meet department and company objectives for Quality, Health, Safety, and Environment (QHS&E).
  5. Process Improvement:

    • Participate in and support improvement activities.
    • Contribute to Lean initiatives within the department.


Performance Evaluation:

Performance will be assessed through the check-in process between the manager and the employee, with criteria established throughout the year.



Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • This position does not include direct supervisory responsibilities.


Health & Safety Responsibilities:

  • Ensure compliance with Health & Safety Management Systems in line with company policies and statutory provisions, considering the complexity and risks of operations.


Qualifications & Experience:

Mandatory:

  • A degree or equivalent qualification in an Engineering discipline, preferably Mechanical or Subsea Engineering.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Desirable:

  • Experience in umbilical engineering and the offshore/subsea industry.
  • Familiarity with engineering tools such as MathCAD (or equivalent) and Orcaflex.
  • Knowledge of design tools such as AutoCAD and Inventor is beneficial.
  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis tools like Ansys and Abaqus.
  • Experience in developing Lean best practices.
  • Experience delivering in a project management environment with challenging schedules.
