Head of Data Engineering (Gen AI)

I've partnered with a leading, Berlin-based clinical development company, focused on partnering with a wide range of pharmaceutical companies across Germany.

Aiming to revolutionise drug development medical trials by intelligently connecting data, analytics and technology, they already have an impressive portfolio of optimisation use cases!

Due to the company-wide re-alignment of strategic AI initiatives, they're now looking to add an experienced Head of Data Engineering to the team.

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading 6 engineers and spearheading Gen AI strategy in collaboration with the existing Head of Data Management and their Lead Data Scientist.

Must-Have Skills:

  • 8+ years of experience within Data Engineering, with a minimum of 3+ years leading and managing technical teams.
  • Recent engineering managerial experience working in HealthTech/BioTech/MedTech/e-health/Pharma/Clinical Development. (ideally a minimum of +3 years relevant domain knowledge)
  • Strong expertise in cloud-native data platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) - AWS is preferred.
  • Deep understanding of Gen AI requirements for data ingestion, pre-processing, and model enablement.
  • Proven experience designing and implementing scalable ETL/ELT pipelines and real-time data streaming solutions (Spark or Airflow - preferred).
  • Excellent skills in Python and SQL (experience with additional languages like Scala is a plus).
  • Deep undemanding of MLOps and AI deployment workflows.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Fluent in English (German proficiency is a plus but not mandatory).



Desirable Skills:

  • Knowledge of regulatory frameworks (GxP, HIPAA, GDPR) relating to clinical or patient data.
  • Experience in Signal Processing for Bio-medical data is a plus.
  • Prior experience scaling data engineering teams in a start-up or scale-up environment.
  • German language skills.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Re-define and execute the company's Gen AI data engineering strategy in collaboration with senior leadership teams.
  • Lead, mentor, and scale a team of 6 data engineers, fostering a high-performing and innovative culture.
  • Design and maintain scalable, secure, and compliant data architectures which enable Gen AI model development and deployment.
  • Implement robust data pipelines for structured and unstructured biomedical data (clinical, trial, operational data).
  • Ensure the team's practices align with industry best practices for data governance, security, and privacy.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Data Science, Data Management, IT, and Product teams to align data infrastructure to business goals.
  • Drive technology choices and architecture decisions relating to cloud platforms, storage solutions, and ML Ops frameworks.
  • Act as a thought leader within the organisation for AI enablement through data engineering excellence.



Salary and Benefits:

  • Working Patterns - 3 days in the Berlin offices per week, 2 days remote.
  • Base salary of €95,000 - €120,000 (depending on experience)
